As usual , the wheelchair experts make a claim which they can't back up and when questioned tell the enquirer to do the research .
I haven't made an outlandish claim like Abbott , or you , and then not be able to explain how and why . Next thing you'll be telling me to just ' have faith ' .
Anyway , on this occasion I will post some numbers . Feel free to debate them .
A study by the minerals council suggests a 1gw HELE or Ultra ( they don't know which ) cfps which only really matches emissions from gas would cost $2.2 billion . On further examination their numbers are a bit rubbery . It also means using black coal so that rules out Victoria . It also talks about replacing the whole fleet of black coal stations and that the pricing is based on a 40 year life in order to make the numbers work .
So , the numbers simply aren't there . But let's suppose they decided to anyway .
Hazelwood was 1.6gw . Let's say we built a new 2gw station . The minerals council is saying that would be $4.4 but let's go with $6 bill . It can't be built on brown coal so not in Victoria . It will take up to 8 years to build and it will have to replace an existing one based on the Minerals Council model .
There's a few issues with that idea :
We have to wait 8 years for it . What do we do about power prices in the meantime ? How is that going to reduce power prices ?
It has to replace another one . So we have to shut down one that still might have some life in it .
If it replaces an existing one we are not adding any more capacity are we ?
It needs a 40 year life to be economic . Don't think that's going to work given the pace of renewable development .
The government will have to finance it . That's not going to happen .
So there you go . I've done some research for you . Looking forward to an engaging discussion .
