Being the capital city of the only nation on Earth to have a whole continent all to itself, Canberra cannot *help* but grow into a big - perhaps a very big city.
The biggest mistake Chicago architect Walter Burley Griffin made (when he designed Canberra in the 1920s) was he was convinced the motor car was the wonder (not the curse) of the age - so he made *no* provision for train or tram or 'light rail' (as it's called today) commuter services.
As the city's population expands - Canberra's main roads are getting clogged by the week - especially during morning and evening rush periods.
To address the problem, there's a 'Light-Rail Coalition' (of concerned citizens) that is campaiging for light-rail commuter services.
In today's 'Canberra Times' (on page 21) there is a picture of two Light-Rail campaigners taken alongside the only railway line in Canbarra - the one to goes to Sydney.
