When the volume is not high as there are not many buyers, it does not take much to knock a stock way down and cause panic. And those who are over-extended would be knocked out either by stop-loss order or liquidation by the brokers ... There is a domino effect. The ASX short sell list shows

2.5 millions share were shorted yesterday. I think this was about 40% of the entire volume for the day.
