I love the idea of moving into the realm of banking and finance but lets not neglect an important point.
First of all the telco industry makes much more than $3-$5billion a year, TLS alone chalked up $6billion free cash flow last year.
Also over the course of the NBN (white elephant) rollout there are expected to be 2.4million homes currently "offline" being brought "online" combined with and estimated 1.2million homes to be constructed.
So we are talking a possible 3.6 million homes to add to the telco market, with around 2.6 people per house which is the Aussie average that's 7.2 million people added to the potential customer base.
Over this same period the banks only add the 1.2 million homes to be built to thier potential customer base.
We are talking about a very strong growth in the telco industry over the next ten years.
A move into banking would be a very welcome one but the focus must remain secondary to being a damned good telco.

Ps: TLS's large push into the small business market, smartphone market and i believe very likely the wifi enabled webphone market (ears open on this) combined with the poaching of multiple bankers tells me something good is cooking.
I smell a wifi based payment system coming the moment the NBN deal is done and dusted, NBN deal will have to be done first because the end result of a fully fledged 4G wifi "boosted" network will dramatically hamper the NBN's prospects of being successful.
(MY THOUGHT'S ONLY, NO INSIDE INFORMATION AND SOME MIGHT SAY NO BRAIN)
Pps: housing figures above are based on government modeling so may have been done on the back of an envelope.
