I think that the West is making a big mistake and has not yet fully understood the ramifications from protecting the traditional automakers with tariffs .
The tariffs will only ease the pressure on the automakers from putting more effort into EVs.
The west has not understood that EVs are causing a tsunami of investment and innovation, and will probably surpass the post war american space program for the huge number of ancillary benefits that will be delivered. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_spin-off_technologies
It's difficult to predict what will be the outcome - but who predicted that LASIK, Cochlear implants, memory foam, etc would come from the space program?
People talk about the rubbish cars from China produced by cheap labour - hence the need for tariffs.
Yet, the many videos shown on this thread show a very high level of efficiency, quality and automation - with very few workers. It's like GM and Ford complaining about the cheap Japanese junk cars in the 70's, when our car makers were making 5 cars per employee per year whereas the Japanese made 50, because of their use of robots. Our automakers lived off the tariffs and failed to innovate to improve efficiency.
The number of cars sold in China is much higher than would be required to replace old cars - in China there are about 230 cars per 1000 people including children, whereas the west has 700-800. So a lot of the car sales in China are to people buying their first car - and as the Chinese get wealthier as their per capita GDP is increasing, and as cars get cheaper, this rate of car sales will continue for many years. Plus, the movement to EVs is seeing enormous investment in solar, and batteries as well, and of course research.
This research will yield many innovations - we can expect far more from China now. This will deliver immense benefit to their economy, while the west is looking and complaining.
One thing I noticed is that the Chinese are very quick at getting things going. BYD is a young company, and already it is a world leader.
Tesla did the same, however it is saddled by so much negativity from the traditional automakers and the FF industry, plus some posters here who seem very adept at finding specks in people's eyes when they have beams in their own.
And India is next.
