New low-cost lithium battery chemistries to lead EV market

Lithium iron manganese phosphate (LMFP) is a newer battery chemistry gaining traction due to its higher energy density compared with lithium manganese phosphate, said Vivek Dhar, a commodity strategist at Commonwealth Bank.
Importantly, LMFP features low-cost and safety advantages relative to other chemistries such as those including nickel and cobalt.
Mr Dhar said the evolution of lithium manganese phosphate (LFP) and LMFP battery chemistries will probably dominate the low‑cost electric vehicle market and make significant inroads to the mid‑market where performance and cost are balanced.
“LFP and LMFP cost reductions will likely drive the economics of mass EV uptake around the world,” he said.
