Just the most important fact :
An EV is much more efficient than an ICE vehicle.
An passenger EV consumes around 15kW/100km, while a ICE sedan consumes 5 l of petrol/100km ... gasoline has 8.9kWh/liter so roughly 45kWh/ 100km.
A 40 ton semi-truck consumes around 38l diesel/ 100km, or 380kWh/100km, Tesla semi consumes 170kwh/100km.
So EVs are between 2 and 3 times more energy efficient than ICE, add idle time, heavy traffic , etc and you all know what happens to fuel consumption.
Now about emissions per km when using a coal powered grid, i.e. QLD has around 0.9kg CO2/kWh
Then an EV will emit 14kg CO2/100km or 0.14kgCO2/km
A ICE sedan with just 100HP has 0.2kg CO2/km ....
So if an EV tailpipe emissions are lower in QLD (one of the most coal dependant), then they are also lower in most if not all of the world electrical grids.
As the grids become greener the EVs will follow; it's a virtuous cycle. Greener grids requires storage to firm renewables, EV require more electricity generation but add storage capacity and manageable load/generation....
We'll get there eventually, if we manage to work together and overcome the human tendency to kill each other....
