I think a decent cohort of people look at the rubbish that passes as news in this country and have not or can't really do the maths
Have a long range Atto3 (so 60kwh battery):
- without any issues can get 400km on a full tank (just did a 280km trip on the highway last weekend and had 30% left.....stop on 15kwh per 100kms)
- have had the car for 12 mths and have never had need for a DC charger
- AC charger at home charges at 7kw per hour and we usually charge ~1-2 times a week (not for usage, but it's a iron phosphate battery so no issue in number of charges etc so maintain it at a minimum 50% charge at all times)
- have done 17,000kms on the car in the last 12 mths.....incredibly comfortable and similar to other cars that you can get at ~$50k
In terms of cost:
- we have an AGL plan (NSW) that costs 8c per kWH when charging between 12am-6am, so electricity costs ~$5.00 to drive 400kms so on ~15,000kms per annum the 'fuel' costs anywhere between $200-$250 per annum
- the drive I mentioned last weekend cost me ~280*15/100*8c= $3.36 (even a toyota hybrid doing 5-6l per 100kms would have cost ~$28-$34)
- car financed on novated lease last year for 48k (lease finance excludes GST) and paying $800 per month for 24 mths with a residual value of $27k
- A non EV (similar driveaway) would have cost 50% more for a similar sized car
As for resale, looking at 12 mth old Atto3s with ~20,000km, I can't see any under $40k so the great depreciation is a great myth IMO (perhaps with teslas who change their pricing based on which side of the bed elmo wakes up, but most buyers should be well aware of buying into that brand by now)
