There are many reasons I don't get excited about self-driving cars. This article pretty much covers it. Maybe little developments will affect sentiment or give true believers a narrative to cling to, but once you factor in the issues outlined in this article, it looks to me like this technology won't have a material impact on lithium for a long time.
