Why not? ICEs have evolved many fold since the 70s and 80s to today. Todays ICE are over 40% efficient. More than a coal fire power station that is engineered around efficiency with multiple systems for heat recovery and multi stage feedwater heating using bled steam for even more gains.

Todays petrol and diesel engines use the same or less fuel for many many times the power and torque. If the market wanted efficiency over output, the companies would make the engines with the same output and less fuel use. Thats not what consumers want, hence they continue to increase output for similar fuel use.

ICE's have improved, EV's have not. the only thing EV's can improve on is range. To improved range, either aero or battery capacity / weight needs improvement.

Change petroleum for ethanol lowers emission too.

To grandstand like this is folly... Making grandiose statements make you look the fool.
