Actually the SUV does pay a bit more tax. Using a 200 series Landcruiser and a Honda Jazz as examples higher rego for a V8 versus a 4cyl and about 3x the fuel consumption rate for 3x the excise.
But the real kickers are the trucks and no I don't mean bloated yank utes. A bogie drive prime mover with a triaxle trailer has an allowable GVM of 42.5 tonnes over 6 axels and a B double increases that to 62.5 tonnes over 9 axels although of course not all trucks are fully loaded. Now given the rather limited rail network trucks are essential for moving our freight around but anyone who blames cars of any type for damaging our main arterial roads really doesn't understand the situation.
