there is a virus that has been hitting the pearls that make akoya pearls hard in the Japan. It has been going on for a while and the farmers have been lowering the pearls into cooler water to try and stop the virus. this creates other issues. radioactive waste would not help but is maybe not the major problem yet... All my usual salt water pearl suppliers have little or no stock FWIW.
