recently published a brief article looking at the future of total artificial hearts and the cardiac assist device market in general. From what I’ve heard from physicians, read in my research and seen in the market, there is a need for an effective treatment that can reverse the course of heart failure, first and foremost. Whether such a treatment would cannibalize the LVAD market is uncertain (I think it would), but what it will do is provide earlier options for patients, take market share from pharma, likely affect the reimbursement rate for all CAD, and possibly change how we view heart failure. In particular, I think the C-Pulse device, given it’s ability to improve heart condition as well as low cost-point, could be a disruptive technology for the CAD industry, and moreover, I think it’s curious that the technology has been slow to gain much attention, despite continued interest in very expensive pumps like the Carmat TAH.
