With respect I don't believe the PE did get smashed. If the capitalistion had been through the debt side, earnings would have been impacted not only though increased interest costs but also though additional pre sales / hedging requirements.
It all depends on what the company does with the extra cash. If it can be used to rapidly expand the resource and shorten the development pipeline then the earnings side of P/E will be enhanced.
Organic growth from a smaller cash base would not in any case reap benefits from the current bull market.
