One other thing out of left field.
On Saturday Newsweek published a poll showing that for the first time since his election more people opposed GWB than supported him.
I'm not sure whether this has any relevance but if people lose confidence in their govt, I'd expect them to be a little less confident about spending.
Just my holistic view.
