Having worked in Tennant creek for about a year (not as a Geo) min you the following may apply:

Noble's nob was one of the richest gold mines in australia - it was a mine whereby at one point in time the gold was visible (short period of time) but did run at a very high grams per tonne for mine life

there was also a very successful copper mine owned by Normany Mining.

at one point in time there was a lot of exploration done surrounding Nickel.

Uranium is a possibility but in my time there was never any exploration undertaken.

So these are possibilities - one of the mines was also called a talking mine - ground shifting / creaks etc - this I also believe could relate to the above query but a geo would not to explain further.
