Easy to say in Australia perhaps, but unfortunately, it will need a lot more than just Australia's tiny population to "go solar" to have any real impact.
Also, solar is not a real option any time soon for the majority of applications in many countries. Regions where monsoons, wet seasons, weak solar rays, extended Winter darkness, etc, reduce energy collection and availability for extended periods (eg: Asia, Russia, UK, etc). The technology has a looooong way to go to offer any "real" offset in international energy demands.

The other problem is that oil is not only used for energy. It is critical for production of a plethora of everyday materials (eg: plastics, sovents, paints, etc), all of which are also being used at a greater rate. One hundred people in Australia transfer to solar, another 1 million paint their houses in Asia.
