What exactly does the ABC provide that commercial media doesn't do better?

News and current affairs? - No, the boat left years ago on that one. Skynews gives them a lesson daily.

Sport? - Well, SBS largely has soccer tied up, not sure the ABC makes any strides there.

Drama? - To be fair, the ABC does cough up some excellent drama, mostly from overseas.

Comedy? - What passes for humour is mostly left wing undergraduate stuff.

Children's shows? - Pepa is under the pump every time Scott is under pressure. Again, Foxtel and the commercials do it as wel

So, is it really worth $1.2 Billion for foreign drama which will pop up elsewhere anyway?

I note that, by far, the lion's share of the salaries go to news and current affairs presenters, yet they trail Sky badly in quality and balance.
