The eye of the hunter

I was watching this morning as the cat nonchalantly raised its head and glanced out the window above the bed.
Outside the window is an overgrown camelia bush/tree which I haven't cut back for a few years now. Every year for god knows how long a pair of birds has come and built a nest there, usually signalling their occupancy by tapping on the window irritatingly at random.
The cat had settled itself for its morning sleep but the birds were fluttering around the nest enough to attract her attention. As she languidly raised her head for that casual glance, I knew she had noted the scene and the geography down for future reference.
