Much of the bible verses seems to contradict each other, but there is no contradiction, as it depends what points the author wanted to make and sometimes they only pick part of any point and goes into details.
One has to know the whole picture before anything else.

It's just metaphor for 'mess up and you are cooked.' Believe and you are saved. Theology of Reward and Punishment.
