What I reckon will take us to the brink is western populations not be prepared for declining living standards as inevitably the BRIC economies rise and their populations industrialize.
China and India combined represent about 10x the US population ... and everyone in the US consumes on average 10 times the per capita energy currently consumed by thise in India and China.
It could be completely misdirected to argue for/against climate change ... a more appropriate argument imo could be what is the point of all this industrialisation? So we can get fat and bored and mentally ill?
It is logical that there could well be wars fought over scarce resources within 50-100 yrs imo.
