I know that back when I was consulting with Hemisphere that a couple of deals could not be executed for precisely this reason -- the requisite rights just weren't possible to get in order to deliver a worthwhile experience. Nothing wrong with the LNU tech and the customers were keen, but the rights were either already given away exclusively or were astronomically expensive.
Rights also aren't given 'in perpetuity', either -- they are often awarded annually or biannually. So, getting rights nailed down for a long enough period of time to make a project worthwhile can be tricky.
Sporting rights are absolutely some of the most valuable digital assets in the world so it's not an easy problem to solve. I genuinely believe the LNU tech is THE best tech for personalized highlight creation in the marketplace, and can only assume that they continue to come up against these kinds of challenges.
Pursuing IMG makes a lot of sense, from what I can tell.
