Dave when Labor left office in 2013 the forward estimates forecast deficits out until 2018 this was after they inherited a number budgets surpluses, Labor produced 6 deficits in a row and now at least we are looking at a surplus so we start to tackle the debt. Any fool can spend money but once you have a debt loaded with legislated spending it takes years to get back to surplus then years to stop the rising debt from interest before working on the debt something Labor are blind to.
