Btw, renewables penetration is not a primary cause of the SA blackout. However, large-scale replacement of conventional generators by wind turbines reduces system inertia (a measure of the ability to maintain the system frequency), which in turn can worsen the effects of multiple faults as towers collapse.

I am not saying 100% conventional generation would necessarily have saved SA from full blackout, but pockets of it may have been able to island. In turn, the islanded parts could then have assisted more rapid restoration.
