I think it is reasonably clear that Super Rugby as we know it will never return. With the huge Timezone differences, I'm not sure how engaged kiwi fans were with games that were not played in NZ or Aussie anyway. The tournament was still a 'must-have' for rugby loving households - but the pandemic has just hastened its demise. After 25 years the product was due a refresh anyway.
So some local derby matches for the rest of 2021 and then a trans-Tasman tournament from 2022 has merit I think. why not see if there is an opportunity to allow some of the pacific islands particulate too? Make it a South Pacific tournament.
Smarter men and women than I will be looking at all of the options, and whatever they come up with Sky will need to believe that it is a great product that kiwis will pay for.
And then if they are going to rip up the current SANZAAR deal before it expires in 2025, how much would the new deal cost?
One would hope that Sky TV's continued flexibility over this crisis would be rewarded in some way.
