As at 1700 hours on Saturday 20 March, it appears that all coal trains in NSW's Hunter Valley have stopped running.
I have yet to see confirmation from the Australian Rail Track Corporation or media, but historically Maitland/Hexham have been subject to much flooding, the worst being in 1955 IIRC.
I am assuming rail tracks are under water in some of the swampier, low lying areas.
Singleton in the Upper Hunter had 65.2mm in the 24 hours to 0900 hours, and seven millimetres since then. Maitland Airport had (respectively) 65.4mm and 2.6mm.
Whether some Hunter Valley mines are flooded is another open question.
Delays may disrupt shipping schedules depending on the size of stockpiles at Kooragang Island, Newcastle NSW.
Even a week lost in transporting coal from mines to Newcastle's port can be serious because the 'coal lines' (one track each way from Maitland through Hexham to the port, paralleling two other tracks, one each way, used for passenger and intermodal trains) are usually extremely busy.
