Gold will never be currency in the western world.
Ask yourself one question: Would you take a gold bar as payment for anything, from someone you had never met before? You would need a portable test lab. ie. Volumetric test, weight and dimensional test compared to a known equivalent sample, then a purity test.
Coinage is different. Fakers would face Forgery charges.
