i think the observation that most of them only regret what they haven't done, as according to your friend, is because most people don't like to admit that they're wrong. so they phrase their regrets in terms of things they "haven't done" instead of saying that what they "have done" is wrong.
hope that makes sense :) back to those philosophy books methinks.
