That drilling was a crazy idea from the start if it went as intended.....

Drilling 17.5 inch dia holes a metre apart? There wasnt going to be much left between the holes?? If that metre was between hole centres, especially. The effect would have been indeed the same as a bulk sample, but slower to achieve and more costly.
