Gungho, spot on matey....... what economic ore is left is key........ but moreover to your point on the Gap...... you are precisely correct in your query....... and the answer in why they went deep lies in the 1939 Black friday fires and that has gotten some press over the years....... by all accounts the town was decimated and nothing stood so wmc bods put on crews sinking the shaft until they hit paydirt in the dyke...... paydirt was hit in the achilles lode..... but that was over 1,000ft deeper than where they had been before the fires............. there is plenty on this occurrence in press clippings, history and their site....... good luck and dyor of course......
