Science and religion has never been in harmony because the religious only ever accepted the science that did not contradict their theology.

Sure there was an age when science was held to be dear by theologians, they practiced it but it was always considered a dark art. Science is amoral, and being knowledge based it has no more need to take on religion than does a gathering of cricketers, or a group of bricklayers.

It just so happens that as science began to penetrate the wonders of this universe it began to reveal the grand errors embedded in religious belief. Rather than humbly acquiescing and looking at the Bible in symbolic ways the religious dug their heels in, their egos would not let them accept the truth. Meanwhile God is not in any way challenged by the revelations of science, rather it turned out that the only challenges to God came from religion itself who could not differentiate between symbolic and literal and to this day they can not find a shred of humility to let their superstition and dogma go.

Conflict is the feed-stock of religion, find an enemy, build an authority base and form the tribe, give the tribe very specific rules, beliefs that contradict reality and makes them feel a special, standalone culture and you have them for life. Science makes a wonderful enemy, even though science and religion are the same thing in essence.
