Jesus speaking the words of God, says those words are Spirit.
Jesus also says, that which is born of Spirit (God's word for example), is Spirit.

The ancients most likely thought that ambient light is separate from the sun, that you can have days without the sun...a cloudy day with no visible sun is still 'daytime.'

Genesis is flawed for a number of reasons in any case, its stories adapted from older religions and cultures, etc.
