One of the threats to investing in graphite is the potential for substitutes. In fact that is the case for any raw material. However, as a potential investor you have to invest serious time in keeping up-to-date with all the various developments in battery technologies that are in the research phase. As this story points out, there are still headwinds and unknowns for a lithium metal battery that doesn’t work well with conventional electrolytes.
Battery engineers need to work with what is practical, cheap and readily available which is why I’m leaning towards a big future for graphite.
