Fact-checking organisation Politifact was verifying/debunking candidate claims as the debate unfolded.
Among Donald Trump's false claims, they included:
- Inflation is not the "worst in our nation's history" as he said
- The US did not leave "$US85 billion" worth of equipment behind in Afghanistan. An independent report found $US7 billion worth of equipment was left
- Haitian migrants are not eating pets in Ohio. There is no evidence and city spokespeople have spoken out against the claim
- There is no evidence countries like Venezuela are sending criminals or the mentally ill to illegally migrate to the US
- An investigation found there was "no evidence" Trump had ordered "10,000 National Guard soldiers" to be ready for January 6
- There is no state that allows for the killing of a baby after birth, and access to late-term abortion is limited
- The FBI does not leave out the "worst cities" from its data on crime
Kamala Harris also made several statements that were exaggerated or needed further context, according to fact-checkers, including:
abc link.
- Unemployment spiked to a post-Great Depression record during the pandemic, but had fallen before Biden entered office
- Trump was referring to electric vehicles when he said there would be a "bloodbath" if he was not elected
- 765,000 manufacturing jobs were created during the Biden administration, not 800,000. Some of that increase reflects the post-pandemic return to work
