    I agree with your approach.

    Any time I get asked by work to attend an event I think is ridiculous, I just ask "is it compulsory?"
    Then I make a non commital answer of looking at my schedule, not knowing yet etc etc

    I could try and explain why I think it's pathetic, but why bother? It will just lead to an argument then a wasted meeting.

    Let the no attendance speak for itself.

    Still, in a non-employment situation, with nothing being shown relating to your employer, why shouldnt people be able to say their views?

    If we can't debate political topics (nearly everything is political) without fear of reprisals for our view, then we don't live in a true democracy.
