"Try - A Visit from the Goon Squad - Jennifer Egan. - great book - read the reviews"
I did try this, after reading reviews that praised it highly. Just couldn't get into it, perhaps something to do with the shifting times and situations. Can't quite remember now, but I didn't manage to finish it.
David Vann's books "Caribou Island" : "Legend of a Suicide" were extraordinary. Well written, profoundly affecting. So I was looking forward to his latest "Goat Mountain". It was extremely confronting: the story of a teenage boy who shoots a poacher on his family's property when hunting with his father and a family friend. There is the horror of how they treat the body of the poacher as they would a killed animal, with all the brutality amongst themselves as well as to the dead man.
It was a step too far for me.
Thanks so much to Pictorella for so many interesting suggestions and helpful synopses.
