Just noticed your post on Harris Madmin. Yes, the book I've just finished is AN Officer and a Spy. I bought it on Kindle as it wasn't available yet in paperback. Don't be put off by Cicero. Those books are also page turners.
I read Shantaram some time ago. It was quite a good read but a bit loooong. It needed a good edit. Nevertheless for atmospherics of India, hard to beat. Several grains of salt also required while reading...
