To be human is the most difficult state. We denigrate others because not all prejudices, fantasies and imaginings align with that of others and we tend to see the weaknesses in others and not ourselves. We fail to realise that there is very little reason and common sense associated with being human. Everybody has their foibles, their weaknesses.

We need story telling, fantasy, imagination, make-believe, entertainment, lust, devotion to fandom, the Kardashians, winning the lottery fantasies, novels, movies, plays, music, god, gods, religion, beliefs in superstitions, good-luck charms, astrology, physic-readings, tarot cards, love, faith, lucky rabbits feet, etc, etc, etc. It's kind of dreaming while awake.

It must be essential because we all do it one way or another. It has been with us since the dawn of time and now in this little-personal-screen age we have hit the deepest low we will likely ever hit because societal engagement that once kept our madnesses under check has lost out to little screens. The consequences have resulted in a mental health epidemic which religious fantasy was once very good at channeling into more positive states.

As for religion, it's just another version of this madness we thrive on and in most cases it's benign.

There may be an absolute reality out there, but it most certainly is not in our heads. The capacity for these abstract needs is hardwired and obviously essential just like a cat needs its tail to move all the time to appease its nervous system.
