Once again - this time in relation to Brumby - we get the statement that he never won an election - or was not elected. This is demonstrating a complete ignorance of our system and it is no wonder that the right go from this basis to the whole range of inaccurate statements. Why does the right not understand how our system works?

No american president is elected by the people. The presidential election elects members of the electoral college. It is they who decide who the president will be.
In the UK and here (and in many other parliamentary systems) it is the floor of the house that elects the PM (in fact, all office holders of the parliament). The electorate elects individual members and it is those member who decide who will hold office.

Elections are no a popularity vote for one person or antoher. They are dermined by a whole range of complex issues and they end up elected a body of people who make decisions on their behalf. From time to time, they may chnge their minds - hence office bearers may lose their jobs. Since Menzies, Holt, McKewan, Gorton, MacMahon, Keating and Gillard have all become PM during the life of the parliament without an election. In the USA, Johnson, Ford of recent times. In the UK Callahan, Major and Brown

All these people were elected as a result of the system and were all legitimate office bearers. Brumby was no different - nor is Keneally.

If you want direct election of leaders, then we will need a new constitution.

and while you're at it, can someone please explain why we need a head of state?

why is the ONLY alternative to a constitutional monarch a republic with a president?

Please, can people who post on the politics thread demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of our system?
