I like meat and try not to think of the plight of the animals too much. However, in my youth I always thought that cows were for breeding and that we ate the poor males. That's the way it should be, I thought. Now, in my adulthood, I feel even more uncomfortable in the knowledge that we eat the cows as well.
One way to make SWMBO angry is to remark to her whilst she is eating a nice steak (or worse still, lamb or even worse still, veal) is to remark that not long ago it was part of an animal family group minding its own business and chewing the cud. If it's lamb or veal she's eating then I just remark that it was probably sucking on its mother's teat only a few days before.
I don't make such remarks now. I am beginning to learn that it's not in my best interest to do so.
