you are correct in that the simple answer is that the study size is small. The numbers can skew too easily by chance. So alpha of 0.1 is more appropriate for the purposes of the study (ie have enough confidence that treatment is working so as to expand study and move forward). ultimately more data is required to quantify level of treatment efficacy. but the data is pretty awesome with these numbers already.
