    I dont think the bombs were a matter of retribution.
    They saved lives.
    The USA was preparing an invasion which was estimated, on good data, to cost 2,000,000 allied lives and many times that in Japanese lives. The bombs killed much fewer and demonstrated that continuing the war was pointless.
    The bombs were a humanitarian success.
