    There was a sort of inevitability regarding the dropping of a nuke.

    Yep, that's why they kept some target cities free of damage from conventional bombing.
    They wanted to test out their new weapons and see how much damage they would do in comparison.
    A selection of pristine targets, which ones got it depended on the weather.

    There has been worse destruction from conventional attacks like fire bombing Dresden and Tokyo but it seems that there is something about radiation and chemical attacks that humans find worse than death from fire.
