A lot of Australians beside workers and other stake holders are pretty unhappy with Alan Joyce and recent strategic and managerial direction taken with Qantas. All too often that gets confused with some dislike of Qantas. Quite the opposite often. Qantas' long successful history, quite rightly, is a point of pride for most Australians. Many people and investors are simply unhappy with the direction and antics Alan Joyce has taken of late with Qantas.

Thought it might be better to have a separate thread for Joyce so the two, unhappiness with Joyce and Qantas more generally, well distinct. I laughed today as I read his explanation for higher fare prices:

    https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-advice/flights/qantas-boss-alan-joyce-explains-why-airfares-are-sky-high/news-story/59130e3776f5f23c86e1e73bb9fee829

Particularly his frequent comments blaming the fuel price:

"“But the fuel price issue remains and nobody knows what’s going to happen with things like the war in Ukraine, so it’s hard to know whether fuel prices will come back to 2019 levels."

Really? Qantas will cite its hedging when it suits them but now there is no discussion of hedging, just higher oil prices. Yet oil prices have fallen dramatically from high along with jet fuel prices:

The price of jet fuel as of today in Australia is around $108 USD per barrel. It was over $150 USD for much of early 2022.

SO I AM GIVING THAT A 7/10 ON THE JOYCE B/S BAROMETER for explanation of higher fares.

(or perhaps I do someone an injustice and Qantas are locked in at the higher price, from some recent more poor strategic decision making at an executive level and higher oil prices were locked in mid-year from Qantas when a lot of their oil hedges reportedly rolled off?)
