The article is the usual bollocks from environmental scientists relying on grossly simplistic computer models. They appear to have zero understanding of how airlines actually operate long distance flights or the economics of aviation. [Every single route and aircraft type must be individually modelled with dozens of variables to find an optimum solution.]
eg Real word data from Singapore Airlines indicates that the ~13,600Km San Francisco -Singapore can use 10-36% less fuel per passenger by a direct flight.
