Yassmin Abdel-Magied sacking splits Liberal Party
LIBERAL politicians are split about whether Muslim activist Yassmin Abdel-Magied should be sacked from her taxpayer-funded advisory role.
Conservative Senator Eric Abetz has written to Foreign Minister Julie Bishop insisting she be removed from her advisory role, arguing she is “unfit and lacked the judgment” for the role.
But Liberal MP Jason Wood, a former counter-terror policeman, has emerged as an unlikely defender, arguing that sacking Abdel-Magied would “add fuel to the fire” for extremist recruiters.
Mr Wood, chair of the migration committee, said sacking her “may make many people in the community feel as if justice has been done”, but “ the big picture concern for me is that sacking her will add fuel to the fire for those with extreme views and extremist recruiters”.
