I am no expert on solar, but we've had solar at my families holiday home in the middle of the forest for ~25-30 years (as have some of the neighbouring properties), and it's been 100% reliable.. During all these years, this tiny old panel has been enough to run the lights and some other small appliances for when we need (using a car battery for storage).
Mind you, we only use the place in the summer (-30C in the winter) (hard to see, but it's up on the roof to the right of the chimney..)
But more for the 'big picture' - for me there is no doubt (renewable) electric is the future. Be it cars or your home, all will be powered by wind, solar, and other innovations. I'm a big proponent of wind in particular.. storage is an evolving thing - are things perfect and scalable now? No, but as I've said before, does that mean we throw our hands in the air and stop adopting?
No. Adoptions forces innovation. There are no laws of physics to break, it's all on innovation in terms of storage.
Also, just want to add to your comment 'EVs are for the rich'. Price parity is just around the corner (2 years IMO), but also worth some reflection: when ICE cars first came to the market, how many do you think could afford them? Same with the fridge, tv etc etc.. Just food for thought.
