Tasmania Premier’s leadership hangs in the balance

What the no-confidence motion against the Tasmanian premier means

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s future hangs in the balance, after the Greens and independent crossbench MPs agreed to back Labor’s plans to move a vote of no confidence in the Liberal leader.

Opposition Leader Dean Winter tabled a no-confidence motion about the government’s budget, its plans to privatise government-business enterprise and its handling of the Spirit of Tasmania project.

The no-confidence motion against Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff states that the House of Assembly:

    • Agrees the premier’s budget mismanagement is doing significant long-term damage to Tasmania
    • Does not support the premier’s plan to privatise public assets
    • Has no faith in the premier’s ability to deliver major projects following the Spirit of Tasmania fiasco
    • Believes it can no longer trust the premier’s public statements after repeated broken promises
    • Therefore, has no confidence in the premier, the Hon Jeremy Rockliff MP

“The budget proves beyond any doubt that Tasmania needs change,” Opposition Leader Dean Winter said. “It proves that Jeremy Rockliff’s Liberal Party cannot be trusted with the finances, and if you can’t be trusted with the finances, then you cannot lead this state.”
