During this decade recycling will be a very small part of the materials to be used, and next decade who knows what technology we will talk about.
Yes, nickel is cheaper, but graphite and nickel are what you need the most of. Cobalt is needed in small quantity or it can even be skipped as you said. It is not only the price of cobalt but the child labour in the DRC that is associated with it that drives companies like Tesla away from cobalt.
