Contingency plans. NJ/Qantas Board would have considered any number of options available to them and with that possible consequences and how to minimise fallout, both political and financial. Ideally, when decision time came, it would have been narrowed down to 2 or 3 options, with the final decision made that morning. Then it's all systems go. That's what he gets paid the dollars for.
